OKN Strategic Impact Consulting

South Africa does not have a shortage of businesses that want to give back. It has a shortage of structured, accountable impact.

OKN Strategic Impact Consulting works with profitable South African companies to design, execute, and measure community investment programmes that produce real, traceable change.

The context every South African business owner needs to be honest about

33.2% Official unemployment 8 million people without work Stats SA QLFS Q1 2025
58.5% Youth unemployed, ages 15–24 An entire generation sidelined Stats SA QLFS Q1 2025
56% North West province Highest provincial unemployment rate in the country Stats SA QLFS Q1 2025

Every unemployed person is a customer you do not have, a taxpayer not contributing, a potential employee you cannot access. This is not someone else's problem. It is a market problem, and it belongs to every business owner in South Africa.

What poorly structured CSI actually costs

01
Money wasted

Spend disappears without producing traceable change in anyone's life.

02
False accountability

The company feels it has done something. The community has experienced little.

03
Reputational damage

Communities notice when the sandwich van comes once a year and nothing follows.

04
B-BBEE SED obligation met inefficiently

Money leaving without strategic intent. The obligation is met. Nothing changes.

Five services. One outcome: investment that compounds.

The Discovery Workshop

Finding the investment that belongs to your business.

A facilitated half-day session with your leadership team. We surface the intersection between what your company genuinely knows and where that knowledge can create real change. The output is a defined focus area, a community anchor, and a point of view on impact the CEO can stand behind.

The Impact Blueprint

Turning the idea into a plan that can actually be executed.

Your investment plan, documented before a single rand is spent. Project scope, delivery framework, budget structure, baseline measurement, and risk register. The document the CEO signs off on — and the one that holds everyone accountable.

Execution Support

Getting the plan delivered, with or without internal capacity.

Flexible by design. For companies with internal capacity, I structure staff participation across the programme period, including Mandela Day as a purposeful touchpoint — not the programme itself. For companies that need external delivery, I source, brief, and manage a vetted delivery team. Your name on it. The complexity handled.

Monitoring & Evaluation

Proving it worked, honestly.

Built in from the start, not added at the end. A baseline report at programme outset documents what exists before the investment begins. Annual check-ins track progress. A full evaluation at programme close compares actual outcomes against the baseline. Not impressions. Not attendance registers. Measurable change in people's lives.

Optional — quoted on scope

PR & Impact Communication

Telling the story in a way that is worth telling.

Impact that is not communicated cannot influence anyone else. The end-of-programme report is produced when the investment has run its full first cycle and the people it was designed to serve can be followed into their next chapter. Grounded in M&E data. Free of vanity metrics.

What this looks like in practice

Thandos Auto Shop | Pretoria

  • Conviction-led investment
  • Early Childhood Development
  • Mabopane

The CEO of Thandos Auto Shop grew up in a township outside Pretoria. He began formal learning in Grade 1 — not because of a lack of ability, but because quality early childhood education was not accessible to him. He built a successful business regardless. He knows, with clarity, what a stronger start would have meant. His investment is the one he never had.

The context that made this decision urgent

South Africa ranked last out of 57 countries in the 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study. 81% of Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning in any language. These children are not failing because of lack of ability. They are failing because the foundation was never built.

How the programme is structured

The Discovery Workshop established that the most meaningful investment was not infrastructure, but people. Teacher training and salary stability are the two things that determine whether an ECD centre can sustain quality over time. A centre with stable, qualified educators produces children who arrive at Grade 1 ready to learn. The Impact Blueprint covers three investment streams: educator salary support, phased teacher training aligned to the Department of Basic Education's professionalisation agenda, and a once-off infrastructure and resource investment at programme outset.

Composite case study. Details are illustrative of programme design methodology.

About Omphile Kgwathe-Nkiwane

Digital Education and Social Impact Leader | Strategic Impact Consultant

10+ years building learning systems, strategic partnerships, and digital products that have reached more than 900,000 learners across Africa.

I am not a generalist who stumbled into impact work from a corporate affairs background. I have spent my entire career at the intersection of community need, technology, and accountability — building things that work for people who the mainstream tends to design around rather than for.

My first job out of university was in the Social Innovation team at Red Bull South Africa. That grounding taught me the most important lesson in impact work: the best programmes are built with communities, not for them. And the worst ones are built by people who have decided what the community needs before they have listened.

Red Bull South Africa | Social Innovation Team
Delivered community-centred mentorship, funding, and digital learning programmes for entrepreneurs through Amaphiko and Basement. Built foundational practice in outcomes-led programme design and community-rooted delivery.
Digify Africa | Client & Delivery Lead
Led Africa's first WhatsApp-based Learning Management System — a platform that reached learners where data costs, connectivity, and device access are real constraints. Achieved a 60% learner completion rate on mobile-first technology at a time when global LMS completion rates averaged 5–15%.
Dinaledi Initiative | Lead
Placed young graduates into leading South African agencies as community managers, while building structured digital career pathways for young people who had previously been locked out of the industry.
Awards & Recognition
Cannes Lions Nomination. IAB Bookmark. Loeries. iF Social Impact Prize. Featured on Radio 2000, ITWeb, The Citizen, Channel Africa, and the GCIS website.
Enterprise Partnerships
Nedbank, Meta, Satrix — client acquisition, revenue growth, and senior strategic partnerships.

This is for you if:

  • You have been going through the motions on CSI for years and know it is not working.
  • You have a B-BBEE SED obligation being met inefficiently — or not at all.
  • You have a genuine connection to a community issue through personal experience, sector knowledge, or geography.
  • You want investment that compounds over time and you are willing to be held accountable for what actually happens.

How it starts

  1. 01
    Initial Conversation

45 minutes. No commitment. We establish whether there is a fit and what the right starting point is.

  2. 02
    Discovery Workshop

A facilitated half-day session that produces a defined focus area and a community anchor.

  3. 03
    Impact Blueprint

A documented investment plan with budget, milestones, and measurement built in before a rand is spent.

South Africa cannot afford for its middle market to keep giving away sandwiches while 8 million people cannot find work. If you are ready to do something that actually means something, let's talk.
